* A Look At Motivation And Goal Setting And Achieving Success

When we take a look at motivation and goal setting, what are they exactly? If we think of motivation, and consider that motivation is fuel. Then goal setting is guiding that fuel in a given direction.

So, which is more important in motivation and goal setting? They both go hand in hand. The motivation is needed so you can get off the ground and take action. Without a goal there is no need to be motivated, after all what would you be motivated about?!

* Why!

If your level of motivation dictates whether you will even see your goal, how are you going to get motivated? The answer is your why. Why do you want this goal in the first place? Your level of motivation will be born from your why.

Why do you want that house, why do you want the million dollars, why do you want a certain type of woman? Why? Asking these questions will give you a reason to continue. So many people often will simply leave it at ‘I want to get rich’, but this has no level of motivation, and ultimately they fail. Symbols are not things that give us long term motivation.

* Getting More Motivated

We now know that motivation is a key ingredient. Yes, motivation and goal setting go together, but there is a difference. Your goal could take a few seconds of your time to think about or it could take an hour, a day, week or even years, but your motivation must be constant.

Getting more motivated requires several points to consider. These are your questions. A good place is to begin with your why. This acts as a litmus test also. Knowing your why, when setting your goals, you will get motivated. However, if you feel that you can’t get motivated, then consider whether this is simply wanting things that others want, and not what we want. Everyone wants to get rich, but maybe you don’t. Maybe you do want it, and have real reasons. This will give you the motivation to achieve the results.

Results are born out of motivation, and your motivation and goal setting go hand in hand. You must know why you want something, so you can achieve it. Far too many people hope, few try, and even fewer succeed. Many who try never succeed because there thoughts are simply materialistic. No, you don’t want to eat, you want to eat because it gives you nutrition to live another day.

Goal Setting, Common Mistakes When Making Goals

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

By Jason Osborn

Making goals are a great thing to do but many times you are setting yourself up for failure before you even begin. Knowing what some of the common mistakes are in goal setting will help you avoid so that you can set yourself up for success, not failure. As you set goals in your life begin to test them to see if they are sound goals or if they have some of the common mistakes listed below.

1. Set too many goals at one time.

You don’t want to overload yourself with things to do. You will have much more success by being focused on 2 or 3 goals then you will by having 10 or more goals. If you are focused you can accomplish more.

2. Making your goals too big.

It’s better to set a smaller goal and achieve it than it is to set a huge goal and never come close to ever reaching it. Huge goals look great on paper but can become huge failures in real life.

3. Setting improper time frames.

Have you ever set a goal that you told yourself you would reach in a much shorter time than was ever possible? This is very common. It’s better to be a little pactient and set a more realistic time frame than it is to be over ambitious and not even come close to reaching your goal on time.

These are just a few common mistakes that are made when goal setting. The more you learn about setting goals the more you will find that you accomplish them faster and better.

Goal Setting Activity

By Greg Dempsey

Most people find the act of a goal setting activity almost impossible because they set goals that are way too large and become disheartened before they ever come close to reaching them. A goal setting activity that works is one that is broken down until it represents a single event. It is the progressive, sequential accumulation of single events that ensure the final desired end result.

For example, if your goal setting activity is to save $10,000 this year and you are paid fortnightly, you should have 26 single event goals, each written progressively to allow for changed circumstances.

Your goal setting activity should be what I call SMARTIES! SMARTIES is an acronym for the following:

SPECIFIC
Be absolutely specific when producing a goal setting activity and use the present tense.

MEASURABLE
You need to be able to monitor your progress so you can measure your success.

ATTAINABLE
You also need to be able to conceive your goal to attain it.

REALISTIC
Obviously goals need to be within the grounds of logic and circumstance.

TANGIBLE
Your goal needs to be something that is real or physical, that you can see and/or touch.

INSPIRATIONAL
If your goals don’t inspire you it’s unrealistic to expect that you’re going to be driven to achieve them.

EMOTIONAL
The more emotionally involved you become with your goal the quicker it will manifest into your life.

During your goal setting activity, as well as writing down your goals, I recommend you write down every possible benefit you will realize as a result of achieving your goal and its impact on all areas of your life.

Goal Setting

Goal setting is a very powerful way that can help you achieve anything in life much faster then if you didn’t have any goals set. However, there are some common goal setting mistakes that you want to avoid so that you can reach your goals as fast as you can.

One of the most common goal setting mistakes is to set to many goals at one time. Have you ever tried to carry too much in your arms at one time and before long you couldn’t manage it? You might have been able to balance everything in your arms for a little while but then, all of a sudden, everything in your arms come crashing down to the ground.

Goal setting can seem a lot like that if you set too many goals at one time. The best way to achieve your goals in life is to focus on just a few at a time. This way you are not spreading yourself so thin that you can put your full effort into anything. The more focused you are in your goal setting that more you will find that you achieve.

The best way to stay focused in goal setting is to pick 2 goals. One goal should be a long term goal that will take anywhere between 6 months and 5 years to reach. Your second goal should be a short term goal that somehow supports your long term goal. As you complete your short term goal, move on to another short term goal that supports your long term goal. By doing this you will be working on your long term goal while seeing the benefits of achieving your short term goals.
